Joel McCord

Joel McCord - Trumpet and Flugelhorn

Joel picked up his first trumpet when he was 10 years old, puckered and blew and produced a sound more closely related to cows than music. He's improved some since then and continues to work at it, though he had to get a job as a reporter at the Baltimore Sun to pay the rent and put food on the table.

In the 42 years since that first bleat, he has played in rock bands and symphony orchestras, Army bands, and drum and bugle corps, and now Crabtowne. At the Navy School of Music, Joel studied for six months with Paul Taylor, a former student of the Chicago Symphony's principal trumpet, Adolph Herseth.  This means Joel knows somebody who knows somebody who is somebody.

Now he takes advice from trumpeter, Scott Holbert, considers Bob Cady, who is in his 80s and still blowing strong, his hero, and wishes he could play jazz like Scott Rich and Ken Reck.
